HISTORY OF THE KINGDOM OF KHANDOR
The Kingdom of Khandor is situated on a small island, rich with the necessities to support life, surrounded by a vast ocean, alone in the world save for a distant land with which the Kingdom trades occasionally. Written records indicate that the Khandorians have always been a diverse people, made up of three distinct races: humans, lycans, and blutsaugers. Despite their differences, these three groups have managed to live in relative peace and tranquility, working together to advance their society in all aspects.
For the majority of this time, the most powerful people were those who had magical capabilities. These people were revered almost as gods and goddesses, as there is no real dominating Khandori religion, for the unimaginable feats they were able to perform by sheer will alone. The Grimoires, or spell books, and Alchemical Labs they used to guide their magic were highly guarded - only those with the capability to harness the knowledge within them were allowed to view them; adding to the veneration these individuals received from the people. Magic could heal, defend, kill - its power unfathomable and mysterious. Even the royal family - who did not wield magic in an attempt to balance power - was never so great in might as the Mages and Alchemists amongst the populace.
Though it seemed by appearances that the non-magical monarchy and the magical "religious center" were equal in power, the literal might of the Mages and Alchemists was a source of serious political tension. The monarchy was intended to rule the kingdom, but if the magical community wished for something to be, they had little recourse to fight against them. Swords and arrows were useless against the strength of magic. Discontent with their lack of power, the monarchy instituted a council of elected officials to be the voice for the people, lead by a chairman or chairwoman. While this gave the lower classes more political clout, a stronger platform on which to urge their rulers for better lives, the magical community still had the upper-hand. If they wanted something, the threat of war or a political coup was all it took to shift policy in their favor.
The royal family shifted tactics again, investing their wealth into the greatest non-magical minds in Khandor, seeking a way to increase the strength of the non-magical people to compete with the Mages and Alchemists. In the last hundred years or so, there was been a sudden increase in technological advancement due the the inventive ingenuity of harnessing the power of steam. The people enjoy the comforts brought by electricity, the ease of mass communication, and more importantly, the almost magic like qualities of modern weaponry. It was also during this span of time that the council learned that magic users required the knowledge of their Grimoires to learn their skills, and the use of magical implements and kits to perform their feats. Without them, they were without any power.
With this knowledge and new technology in hand, the monarchy and council attacked.
Twenty years ago, the current ruling line, the House of St. Germaine, attacked the magical community. With the exception of the royal palace, the Mages and Alchemists lived in the wealthiest section of the kingdom, reserved exclusively for those with their magical prowess. In the middle of the night, while all slept, the royal army stormed the Magic Section. The Mages and Alchemists were taken off guard, still asleep in their beds, as men, women, and children were slaughtered by the modern weaponry the royal family and council had so heavily invested in. A new sub-race of super soldiers, called Cyborgs, ransacked everything, confiscating and destroying magical implements and texts; giving mercy to those who handed them over willingly or led them to the caches guarded magical knowledge and research. The leaders of the magical community were arrested and executed the next morning in the main town square for all to see.
In the span of a single night, Magic was outlawed and the monarchy and council finally held the power it had always wanted. Twenty years later is where our story begins...
