MATHIAS TRUSLOW
OOC Name: Grant
Face Claim: David Tennant
General Information
Race: Human
Magic?: Mage
Magical Implements: He currently does not have one.
Age: 60
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 170
Caste: Upper Class
Occupation: King’s Inventor
Physical Description: Mathias is a tall, skinny, lanky, rather awkward sort of man. He constantly looks like he just ran through a dense forest: his hair is a mess, his clothes, while of a fine make and quality, are always disheveled – if he has buttons they are probably done up in the wrong order. His expression is usually in a permanent state of shock – wide eyes, dropped jaw with closed lips. He is shifty and twitchy and frankly looks pretty suspicious while walking down the street to those that don’t know him.
Personality Description: Mathias is…crazy. Bonafide, certifiably insane. His exact type of crazy isn’t nicely in one category, but as he is still of a kind disposition and he can function day to day by and large, it has never been looked at too closely. He bounces from thought to thought and occasionally gets stuck in his own mind and thought process, needing someone to physically pull him out of it. Social conventions? Forget about it he doesn’t know what that is. If he wasn’t so smart and so useful to the King he likely would be without work. That said, Mathias is a genuinely kind person. He likes people, especially those who take his quirks well, and he appreciates company even if he might not always acknowledge that it is there.
History
Mathias was never quite right, and his family just learned to accept that. He was born into a well-to-do family of magic users, and though Mathias of course had the propensity for it, magic never captured his attention the way that mechanical technology did. His mind worked best with numbers, not phrases, and so he excelled in school subjects that focused on math and sciences. It was odd that he had no interest in pursuing his magical powers more than he was forced to, but his parents were smart enough to recognize his intellect and allowed him to explore academics and technology at his whim. He ended up in accelerated courses, placing him in classes with much older and more affluent students – including the young William St. Germaine: a point we shall return to!
But the older Mathias got, the less right he got as well. He has trouble focusing on anything that didn’t hold his interest. He would go days without sleeping or eating and hardly notice – until he passed out of course. His short term memory deteriorated in areas that hindered his social interactions: he could remember the formula to calculate the effects of gravity on an object but he couldn’t remember that someone had walked into the room literally moments before. Sometimes he would just stand and stare at an experiment for hours on end, not moving, not blinking, not saying a word and hardly breathing, requiring a physical jolt to pull him back out of his musings. Growing concerned for their son, he was observed by an alchemist and a physician, who deduced that the young man had deficiencies of his mind in some respects and overstimulation of the mind in others. So the alchemist concocted a potion that allowed Mathias’ mind to sort out the background noise and in general relaxed him. The potion, which was made monthly for him, did wonders to control his crazy, though he still was a quirky fellow.
However, at the same time, he also began pulling away from his family. Magic users weren’t respected in the inventor circles, as they were seen more as hobbyists than true professionals. What did a mage need technology for after all if they could just magic something to happen? Mathias had never been particularly forthcoming with his magical heritage, but he became even less so. He rarely visited his family, living in a small apartment in the main technology district of the city as he spent most of his income on new gadgets and tools. The potion he drank he procured from an apothecary who was married to an alchemist, so that the magical aspect of it was hidden as well. In all ways, he was a non-magic person; which did ultimately work in his favor.
Mathias was integral to the invention of many technologies that people in Khandor now take for granted – perfecting the refrigeration system, sewing machines, even steam operated carriages he had his hands in. His friendship with Willian St. Germaine was beginning to blossom as well. The young king recognized his ingenuity and asked him to think about weaponry for the army, ways in which they could be of equal or even greater power to magic users. It was an intriguing thought at which he worked and researched diligently. You see, the uniqueness of magic users was that their weapons were built into their bodies – so to be equal a non-magic user would need their weapons built in too! Mathias was no surgeon though, and he expressed his concern to the King, who brought in @west to be his surgical counterpart. This was a duo made in heaven, as the passion Mathias had for tinkering was mirrored in West’s passion for surgery. Together they collaborated on the various sorts of technologies they would need, how it needed to be structured to meld with the organic human form. Trial and fatal error were part of this process of course…but no one really missed prisoners and vandals did they?
In the end, Mathias managed to develop technology that merged seamlessly with the human form, evidenced by the technology his friend have implanted. Cyborgs – Mathias dubbed these enhanced beings – part human, part machine. They were his crowning achievement!
And then the ban happened.
At this point in his life, Mathias was so distant from his magical roots, he had actually forgotten he was one of them – his forgetfulness not fully cured by his potion. He did not realize he had created the technology that ultimately led to the murder of his own family, old friends, and fellow magic users: because in his mind he was no magic user and he had no family. Of course, the ban also meant that his potion was no longer available, and in the 20 years since the ban, his mind has slipped further and further into the insanity that was its natural state.
Mathias still works and invents regularly out of a little shop near the Palace gardens.
