GENERAL CLASS INFORMATION
People with magical abilities were once some of the most powerful and revered in all of Khandor. However, with the outlaw of magic 20 years ago, they have been reduced to the outcasts of society. They have few to no rights, no political clout or representation, and live in slums (if they have homes at all).
- Magic is NOT race specific. This means that Humans, Lycans, and Blutsaugers are equally able to carry the magic gene.
- Magic is hereditary. If your family has no genetic history of magic, you will not have magic.
- The gene that carries magic is DOMINANT and this is known. Given the low standing of magic users in society, non-magic users are FORBIDDEN from marrying known magic users to prevent its spread.
- Known magic users are cataloged and given a tattooed number on the underside of their wrist by the government. There are ways to hide this but doing so and being discovered will result in serious consequences.
- There are two classes of magic users: Mages and Alchemists.
- The two classes cannot be crossed; i.e. a Mage cannot also do the things an Alchemist can do,even with the right tools, and vice versa.
- A Mage can use objects created by an Alchemist for the purpose for which it was created, as can non-magic users. However, Alchemists cannot use Mage casting objects (wands, staffs, etc.).
- All magical items (Grimoires, wands, kits, etc.) are usually disguised as ordinary items so that they will not be easily identified and confiscated.
- Magical items CAN AND WILL be actively confiscated if found in an IC situation. This can make your character's life more difficult until it can be replaced, and may result in other IC consequences (such as jail time). Please remember that part of the fun of these characters is in the rush of doing things that are outlawed and have these sort of consequences. If you find yourself in a sticky situation and are unsure, don't hesitate to reach out to Grant or Vee with questions!
THE HIERARCHY OF MAGIC
Neophyte – The Newbies
Neophytes are the lowest rung of magic users. Their capabilities are very limited, and generally geared towards basic survival (food, water, shelter, basic self-defense/offense). These are both the most vulnerable of the magic users, but also the least likely to be caught given the mundane nature of their abilities.
Herald – The Cocky Teenagers
Heralds are a step up from Neophytes. Their skill set is still fairly basic, but their capabilities begin to broach into the more fantastical and powerful aspects of magic. This is the stage where people start to get cocky, and may be more likely to be caught for magic use as they push the limits of their power.
Acolyte – The True Mages/Alchemists
Acolytes are the very first in the hierarchy that can be considered “true” magic users; in that their capabilities truly show the exceptional power of magic. Those who have reached this level are more likely to be caught for their magic use, but are also more prepared to fend of attackers. Acolytes are more likely to be underestimated in battle scenarios, being a middling group.
Ovate – The Warriors
Ovates are exceptionally powerful and skilled. Their abilities are the place where the lines between magic and celestial power begin to blur. Given the skill set of Ovates, they are generally the most offensive magic users. Their abilities make it obvious that they are magic users, but apprehending and Ovate Mage/Alchemist is tricky at best.
Magister – The Ethereal Leaders
Magisters are the top level of the magical hierarchy and their abilities are truly god/dess like. Those at the Magister level were venerated even by magic users for their strength and dedication to the craft. Magisters are by-and-large the leaders of the Mages/Alchemists and the most feared by non-magic users.
