Maria Venture
OOC Name: Naming
Face Claim: Rose Leslie
General Information
Race: Human
Magic?: Non-Magic
Age: 24
Height: 5’5
Weight: 129lbs
Caste: Working class
Occupation: Part-time blacksmith, aspiring performer
Physical Description:
With striking red hair and blue eyes so dull that they border on grey, Maria tends to stand out in a crowd. She boasts a naturally slim and petite figure, and her time spent at work has left her both fit and toned, if not quite muscular. Her hands are rough and heavily calloused, and she moves naturally, with little thought for her physical presentation.
She most commonly wears her hair freely, but will pull it back into a ponytail whilst at work. On the rare occasions where she gives thought to her physical appearance, she might put in the effort to braid it. Her clothes are the bland and sturdy garb of the lower class, emphasising practicality over appearance. The only jewellery she owns are a single pair of her mother’s earrings, which she only wears on special occasions.
Personality Description:
Energetic and curious by nature, Maria possesses all the boundless energy of youth.
Whilst naturally kind-hearted, she is easily distracted, and will often disregard more important tasks to investigate whatever it is that has managed to pique her curiosity. She has a worrying tendency to speak without thinking, and rush into places or situations that a more thoughtful person might avoid. Temperamental at the best of times, she seems to jump from one emotion to another quickly and fluidly, and at the slightest provocation. She can be naive, gullible, and is perhaps a little too quick to trust.
Despite her seemingly childish nature, Maria is a person of surprising depth. Her natural curiosity belies a love of learning new things, and she always prefers to take the hands-on approach. She openly acknowledges her shortcomings and mistakes, holding firmly to the belief that doing so will allow her to eventually overcome them. She is the sort of person who throws herself into everything she does wholeheartedly, is free with her emotions, and devotes herself to a task with surprising determination once she judges it worthy of her focus.
History
Born into a relatively poor family, Maria’s birth was celebrated by both of her parents. Despite being the product of a risky pregnancy, she was born healthy and strong. Both mother and father loved her immediately and wholeheartedly, and doted on their newborn daughter. Whilst the expenses of raising a child put an extra strain on their finances, they did their best to hide such stresses from their perfect little girl, giving her everything that they possibly could to ensure that she was happy and healthy. Maria remembers little of those early years, but her upbringing was a cheerful one.
When she finally began school, Maria posed an interesting paradox for most of her teachers. She was a curious and intelligent child, but immensely disliked being confined in her lessons. She would only ever do the bare minimum needed to please them, despite her capability, and instead devoted herself to finding new and creative ways to get into trouble.
Early on, she discovered a strange love of the arts, and immediately decided that she wanted to become a professional dancer. Both of Maria’s parents humoured their little girl, and even went so far as to enrol her in lessons, despite how paying for them stretched their finances even further. They both believed that she would grow out of it and move on to more realistic prospects as she grew older, but Maria defied their expectations with her continued interest.
Things took a turn for the worse around Maria’s sixteenth birthday when her mother, Ellie, suddenly grew ill. Both husband and daughter immediately scrambled to care for her, and Maria even went so far as to give up her performing lessons so that they might better afford medical care for her. Despite their best efforts, Ellie Venture passed away in her sleep, surrounded by her closest family.
Life changed rather quickly after that. Maria and her father both mourned the loss of Ellie, but their lifestyle would not allow them to wait and cope with their grief. Maria started spending vast amounts of her free time helping her father with his blacksmith business, to take what little stress she could off of him, and supplement their meagre income in what little ways she could. Her performing remained a distant dream, with all her time split between working with her father and finishing her studies.
The finish of her studies and her passing into a legal adult was celebrated in a small yet personal way. Unable to afford a place of her own, Maria continued to live with her father, and help him with his work. She has continued as such to the present day, and dreams of one day being able to afford a place of her own, make a name of herself, and once again devote her life to her passion.
