Mythical Creatures of Khandor
Khandor is filled with all sorts of amazing and mundane things. In addition to typical animals (cats, dogs, deer, bunnies, etc.), the island is home to many different magical and mythical beasts. These animals are very rare and difficult to find ever since the industrialization of the main city and parts of the island, so you won't just happen upon them on a stroll in the woods. But if ever you should need to find one, let Grant or Vee know, and we might be able to stir one up for you!
Pixies/Faeries
Pixies and Faeries are essentially the same thing, and what one calls them really depends on what they were taught. They are small (no larger than 4" tall), humanoid beings with wings. Their magical capabilities are fairly weak, and they are really just irritating - only being dangerous when they swarm given their sharp, pointed teeth and claws. Their lifespans are very short, and similar to dragonflies they die after mating, which makes the end of their breeding season in the fall the ideal time to harvest their wings for alchemical and apothecary items. The color of their wings indicates their magical and medicinal uses.
Woollies
A Woolly is a small gnome-like creature that, with its fur, is about the size of a softball. Speaking of its fur, it is incredibly soft and maintains a distinct round shape, from which large eyes and little feet protrude. They come in many colors and are very friendly, docile creatures. These are very popular pets in Khandor for small children as they tend to be very resilient. As such, no one has ever seen a Woolly die, rather they tend to get misplaced or lost.
Goblins
Goblins are grotesque, humanoid creatures that stand roughly 3' tall. They are volatile and are known to attack and consume those who do not obey their wishes. Goblins are greedy creatures, who have a habit of invading homes to steal gold, jewels, and other valuables. The best way to ward off Goblins is to leave a small offering of meat and/or gold in a bowl outside one's door. These are best avoided if you can help it.
Wyverns (Aka Domesticated Dragons)
The product of an alchemist’s wild imaginings, Wyverns are essentially domesticated dragons that can be kept as pets. They were formed when said alchemist transmuted the contents of a stolen dragon egg. The resulting creature was small, no larger than the average house cat, with two hind legs and two wings with tiny fingers on the ends where the front legs had combined with the wings. These creatures can only breathe tiny puffs of flame and are very territorial with their owners. Not recommended for small children and quite pricey to purchase.
Werecats
Werecats are difficult to identify unless you know what you are looking for, because for all intents and purposes they are very fluffy cats. However, these cats have the unique ability to change into humans at will - taking the form of young children though they retain their sharp teeth, nails, and slit pupils. Werecats have an unknown lifespan, and are generally considered immortal. To happen upon one is never a happening, but intended by the Werecat. They are both good and bad luck, and speak in riddles. These riddles are intended to aid or warn the person hearing it if they are smart enough to figure it out. To have won the loyalty and companionship of a werecat is incredibly rare but very lucky.
Hippogryphs
Hippogryphs are incredibly rare and noble creatures. They have the front half of a griffin and the back half of a horse. They only appear before those who are of good and noble intent, and will flee those without therefore not much is known about them. To save a hippogryph is a worthwhile endeavor, as they will remain loyal and come to your aid in your times of need from that point forward.
Rocs (R-uhks)
The Roc is a giant eagle, capable of picking up livestock, horses, etc. with ease. These creatures are incredibly intelligent, and are capable of telepathic speech. It is said that hearing a Roc's voice in your head rattles one's very soul with its power. Rocs demand respect, and will kill anyone instantly that does not do so immediately upon discovery.
Phoenix
The Phoenix is a beautiful creature that is emblematic of fire and rejuvenation. While technically immortal, these birds live for around 100 years, then burst into flame, being born anew from the ashes of their previous form. Those who have been lucky to be close to a Phoenix will note that they have distinct personalities from one life to another, indicating that they are indeed new iterations with each life cycle. The Phoenix is the most likely of the mythical creatures to be companions with people. Their feathers and tears can serve many uses but it is important to note that if these are taken by force, they will poison or otherwise kill the taker/user.
Unicorns
Unicorns are amongst the rarest creatures and the most docile. They are loving and trusting to a fault. Killing a unicorn brings instant bad luck upon the killer. Their horn, hair, and blood are amongst some of the most potent ingredients for alchemy, the latter being incredibly difficult to come by as hair and horns are shed regularly. Unicorns are solitary creatures and only come together during their breeding season in the spring.
Manticores
A Manticore is possibly the most sinister of the mythical creatures in Khandor. It can only be summoned by an alchemist, and so long as its magical bond is intact, it is impossible to kill (aka, kill the alchemist and the summoning potion/device and the Manticore will die). Their venom has no antidote and their teeth and claws are lethally sharp. As such, summoning a Manticore was outlawed many centuries ago by the magical community and one has not been seen in nearly 200 years.
Dragons
Dragons are one of the rarest, and most fearsome of the creatures, living in the mountains on the northern edge of the island for the most part. While they come in many shapes and colors, they always have four legs, two wings, are scaled and breathe fire. They are untrainable and not friendly. Approach at your own risk. It is best to look for already deceased dragons or shed scales, claws, etc. if they are needed for any purpose.
